I recently received my second generation Hermes Ambassador with carbon ribbon mechanism. .
The Hermes Ambassador is one of these best typewriters ever made. This well-used example is an excellent depiction of how quality-build machinery can withsta. The Ambassador typewriter has standard/carbon ribbon so you can use black/white correction ribbon to correct the carbon ribbon. It's a manual with a correction ribbon! So all that's why I think it's the best manual I've ever used. The Ambassador is a great machine and worth picking up if the price is right. I'd definitely love to hear more about these. Its typeface, Hermes Special (ten-pitch), is a tad too widely spaced for my taste. Due to this, even a fifty-year-old Hermes can withstand hours of constant use; so, before you punch in your credit card information for the first Hermes you can find, take a look at these notable models and see which is the best for you. This Ambassador is from 1976, the last year of production. I wanted it mostly for the original crate that contained it. But it's a pretty nice-looking machine, and it's the first of its type on TWDB. In fact, it looks like I have the earliest Ambassador (1951) and the latest Ambassador (1976) listed on TWDB at this time!
I own two Hermes and they've both been disappointing to me. My Hermes 3000 is a magnificent machine which is beautiful and responsive to the touch. I'd use it for all my typing, if it didn't start skipping about midway across the page. I'm looking for actual vintage Hermes carbon ribbons (and/or spools) and/or copies of an owner's manual, so that I can see what the spool looked like and how it was threaded.
